A very interesting article. I come here as an artist and feel like I have stepped into a truely magical world of sound.

It's a great article. It really changes my initial thoughts on sound completely. Thank you for the link and the different perspective! Much appreciated.

Thanks a lot Richard, very interesting and helpful article. That's great to see a sound engineer sharing his knowledge (especially on surround recording). Thanks for that!

It was very interesting reading an article from the perspective of a sound-nerd and how he goes about stuff. The part with the debate on whether he is a spy will remain with me foreversmile)

Basically I'm just starting to look around my options on a Linux box, I want to record podcasts but given nothing on the tech side really makes sense to me, Audacity and ALSA is turning out a bit of struggle. Even things like making my PC simply to record my voice louder is a barrier, why do I have to become an expert to achieve a simple task? I'm frustrated. So it was nice to read that the nerds in the field do run into trouble from time to time as well.

Thank you for your thought provoking article.
I had access to a sound bank library at one time and got to know many of the clips.
Later I was surprised to hear those sounds over and over again synced to many different visuals.
I am happy to hear that there are people out there on quests similar to yours to keep the audio realm new and interesting.
Also I appreciate that you have taken the time to submit audio to freesound. It is important to keep a high level of quality audio available for people to use.

    Cheers

    Thanks Richard.

Projects like Freesound pre-empt a world where the whole humanity is connected, friendly and sharing.
When I joined Freesound as a member I did it because it was a "funny place" where I could find lots of interesting sounds. I have used these in things as diverse as home-made music pieces and harmless office pranks.

I have always had an interest in sound and experimental music. Did a lot of recording on simple portable tape recorders and using my stereo as a kid. Later to move my experimentation to the computer world, starting with a Spectrum +2, later a couple of Amiga computers and nowadays PC laptops.
Still it was all just for fun. Only recently have I began to produce samples I feel are of enough quality and usefullness to upload into Freesound.

The important bit, and where the "human connectivity and sharing" comes into play, is that there are a wealth of people here like Richard. People who are real sound experts, designers, musicians... and they are able and willing to share their work and knowledge with the rest of us.
    Amazing stuff !

    hmmmm..... erm..... I forgot...

I can't find this article, even by searching for it online. The link posted back to member LS on the first page of this thread doesn't seem to work anymore (times out).

Can someone please post a link to this article? smile

Hey, that looks like it! Thanks afleetingspeck! Still wish it was on the archive.org proper...I've had a lot of trouble with the wayback machine over the years, to the point of where I almost gave up on using it to find stuff.

Wow, there's the old freesound site too...I like the new one, but I sort of miss the old one...nostalgia I guess...wink
