I was surprised by how much I loved these random sounds crunched together; it was so mysterious! So I processed very little compared to some of my other work. I did use reverb and pitch warping plugins on the "cascade of the ketagawa" sound and there are a couple versions of the "running water; babbling" sound with comb filters. Other than that the only processing I used was changing the duration of the sounds.

Thanks kosten, Jovica, CyberialLainKittyCat, denalwa, grosgraingrass, domrodrig, theta4, NoiseCollector, morewaves, batchku, and everyone who loves Freesound!

It will work soon. SoundCloud is having some transcoding issues, a bunch of people uploaded this afternoon and the site just can't deal at the moment. But that is where it will be when they finally get everything transcoded. Sorry, I didn't realize it would take awhile until after I made the post.

    Here's the entry: http://soundcloud.com/afleetingspeck/freesound-org-dare-8-2011

    Description format:
Sample name - used as (processes/effects applied).

[Different types of reverb applied to _all_ the samples used, so I won't mention reverb again. Also, variable pitch changes and automation used throughout on most of the samples.]

    1. Steampipe - bass (used a section of the steampipe which had the most bass, sampled it with the root note being E# and stretching it to a couple octaves to get the different notes; mild distortion, eq, compression)

    2. Batchku - pseudo shaker (mild eq, stereo widening)

    3. Morewaves - static, percussive in the same use as a shaker, but sharper, found towards the end of the song (cut up the sample to get a small note, and used it as a percussive hit, eq)

    4. Grosgraingras - melody (processing and fx just like steampipe above)

    5. Denalwa Hinge - flutter flute in the background

    6. cyberialainkittykat - intro, evilsounding... sound (extensive reverb, sampled to different notes)

    7. Theta Hardkick - bass drum (Compression, eq, distortion)

    8. Kosden e - vocals (used it as three different samples, all differing only in terms of pitch, distortion and eq, delay)

    9. Water running - water running [loved this sample] (eq, looping and amplifying)

    10. noisecollector - hihat (gated it, distortion, eq, stereo widening), and snare (phaser, chorus, flanger, eq)

So here's my entry that doesn't quite follow the parameters - I wanted to do a sound design as if it were a film or a live theatre performance. All sounds are from Freesound.

    http://soundcloud.com/brandon-h-yu/1220challengeb

Please listen to the soundbyte before reading how I used the sounds. Below is a spoiler of how I utilized each of the ten sounds and also added 8 extra sounds and my thoughts of what the "narrative" is which is open to interpretation.

    Extra 8 tracks:
    countrysidewinterevening02.wav by pcaeldries (0:00)
    walkinginsnow.aif by spandau (0:06)
    man_sighs.wav by themfish (0:04), (0:35), (0:37)
    tilt.wav by Moeder Babelutte (0:1cool, (0:25), (0:29)
    cotton-flapping by benboncan (0:40)
    dive-mixdown by gyzhor (0:45)
    bubblesrealslow-2 by rhedcerulean (0:45)
    phasinbubbles by suono (1:04, 1:11...)

    Contest's 10 tracks:
    running-water-babbling by domrodrig (0:00)
cascade of ketagawa by morewaves (0:12)
---Slowed down when the character "jumping"
    hinge by denalwa (0:30)
    mb-mbbb-ha-in-out-028 by batchku (0:39)
    ---Reversed
    darkpad by jovica (0:40)
    insideanothertrashcompact by noisecollector (0:45)
    cyberialainkittykat (0:52)
    ---Minimal volume
    e by kosden (1:01)
---Very slowed down + Reverb and Delay + minimal volume
    radioblurb by grosgreenglas (1:02)
---Slowed down + Reverb and Delay + minimal volume
    hardkick by theta4 (1:23)

    Narrative:
A man is in search of an animal that is underwater. He jumps off from a great waterfall and falls into the rabbit hole...

The man was characterized by the footsteps (walkinginsnow), the sighs (mansighs), and the holding of the breath (ha-inout) - while underwater he is characterized with the foreground bubbles (phasinbubbles).
The jump was characterized and backed by music (hinge, the flute), and (darkpad) along with some added foley (cotton-flapping) and the slow down effect used on (ketagawa).
The entering into underwater was sweetened by the snap of the (trashcompact) to backup the dive sample.
While underwater, the ambience was (bubblesrealslow).
The unknown creature encountered is a mix of (cyberialainkittykat), theta4's (hardkick) and kosden's (e).

EDIT: Oh yes, and the TILT.wav was used as a sort of GPS-like device.

    Dear Freesounders

Here is my dare entry. My first entry shared via Soundcloud... so hopefully this will work...
    http://soundcloud.com/alienxxx/alienxxx-random-power

Let me just begin by saying that I thought we were extremely fortunate with the set of 10 random samples for this dare. The set included a number of sounds which were ready-for-use including a bassdrum sound and an excellend bass-synth sound (how lucky is that!)
Further, the set contained several sounds from which other useful sounds such as hihats could be easily obtained.

Of course, if that made our work easier in one way... in another way it meant that the quality of the entries was going to be much higher... As always, I was surprised by the quality of the pieces submitted... This time I was also surprised by the quantity! - We seem to have a proper dare going on now!

During the construction of my piece there were several instances where I felt challenged: normally I would have just reached for another sound to complete what I was trying to achieve... Of course, the rules of the dare would not allow it! But then, as I forced myself to work with the available sounds, I was surprised at the almost endless variety that was possible (and easy) to obtain from such limited set!

A short summary of how all the samples were used:

    6663__jovica__steampipe-7-darkpad-c2
This sample was used for the bass drones. Both with and without distortion

    10116__batchku__mb-mbbb-ha-in-out-028
I created several hihat sounds from this sample. One of the sounds was reversed.
These hihat sounds were also used for further processing

    31534__morewaves__cascade-of-the-ketagawa
Initially a sample which I thought would not be very usefull proved the most versatile of the lot. Here are the uses I can remember:
    - A very small section of this sample was used as a burst of white noise and added to another manipulated sample to create a snare sound.
    - Everytime you hear the distorted bass sound, there is also a section of this sample playing and being fed into the distortion unit along with the bass sound (sample 6663 and sample 31534 are mixed and fed to the distortion unit)
    - used as a short raiser effect with a simple volume envelope

    33331__grosgraingras__radio-blurb
Used various short clips of this sample. Some were pitched, some were fed through distortion

    57916__denalwa__hinge
The starting sound of my piece. Sliced, some slices repeated and dropping in pitch.

    60196__cyberialainkittykat__18
This proved to be the most challenging sound to use due to its odd pitches sequence and AM sort of sound.
In the end stretched it to fit 2 bars of my looped rhythm and used it in one of the song sections.
Also cut a few slices of it and re-ordered for a slightly different sequence.

    67291__theta4__hardkick2
Cut out the reverb tail for a tighter sound and used as the bassdrum sound throughout the track.
Also took a section of this sample, mixed with sample 31534 and used to create a snare sound, which is also used throughout the track.

    112583__kosden__e
    Stretched, sliced, pitched and sdistorted.

    119099__domrodrig__running-water-babbling-1-2
Another sample I had trouble fitting in. Ended up appearing twice.
    - Abused the noise reduction feature in Audacity to create a tweeting bleeping sequence from this sound. Then just compressed it, low pass filtered to remove anything above about 18kHz and further compressed it several times to reduce peaks and increase overal volume. This is the high pitched bleeping sound that can be heard overlayed over the rhythm at around 1m25s.
    - The sound appears totally unmodified around 1m50s.

    126810__noisecollector__insideanothertrashcompact
    A very useful sound.
    - Highpass filteres to create a hihat sound
    - Also used in SIR as an impulse response and used to process various sounds (believe this was the intended use for this sample when it was uploaded to Freesound).
    - one of various sounds fed through a feedback system to create drum sounds.

    Other processing and software used
    - Looking for some drum sound variety, I used some of the "percussion" sounds I had already created, or sample 126810 and fed them through a signal chain in Ableton Live containing a feedback loop. Within the feedback loop I had a lowpass filter and sometimes a distortion effect.
The resulting sounds were the processed in Audacity to trim the good section and apply suitable volume envelopes.
The drums created this way appear in the piece from 1m10s onwards. You will know them when you hear them!
    - Reaper was used to put the song together. The effects used were:
-- Preampus Metal Razor 1.01 (by Acmebargig) - this was the main distortion effect used. It has a strong edge so I set the wet % to 30-50% in and sometimes used a chorus effect afterwards to smotth the sound a bit.
-- Reaper's built in chorus and delay effects
-- SIR was used with sample 126810 to process many sounds within this piece.
-- many sounds were stretched and/or re-pitched using Reaper's default stretch algorhythm
    - Audacity was used to process the initial samples (trim, filter, fade-in, fade-out, volume envelopes, etc)
    - Reason was used to sequence all the beats. - i am used to this program and quite like its drum machine.

I guess the best reference for a sample is its number.
As far as i know, this cannot change, even if the user goes in and completely changes the description and tags.

If you are looking for a sample that you have downloaded, you can go to your homepage at freesound, from the list at the top of the screen press 'attribution'. That will list out every sound or pack that you have downloaded from freesound.
