Hello Everyone,
We were thinking of adding google ads to freesound (if university allows us to) in order to help pay for a few things. Server maintenance, new hardware, freesound workshops and perhaps paying musicians to come to our studio, record the multisampled instruments and upload to freesound...
If we have a very "open" policy on what happens with the money, would you be OK with seeing google ads on the server?
The ads could be either placed in the upper right corner of the site, or in particular locations (like the search box).
- bram
I don't see why not. Server maintenance, new hardware, freesound workshops, musicians, sounds like there are more pro's than cons here As long as they aren't pop-ups...
I worry that the initially benign Google has changed with it's IPO and combined with it's dominant market position I would prefer to use a number 2 like Yahoo - but I use your site for free so who am I to dictate?
James
yer, if it helps keep this masterpiece alive and breathing, bring on the ads!
The agony of choice...
In the end I voted 'yes'. I'm not a big fan of ads and I think that the website as it is with its colour scheme and its arrangements looks pretty neat. Adds may disturb that.
However, I understand that Freesound needs more funding and as long we don't start asking fees advertisements are the way to go nowadays. Although I still think that applying for a grant at the EU may work as well. The most important thing is to keep FS running and I'm surprised already that the university is generous enough to keep FS on the air.
With regard to the interface I would suggest to keep the homepage as it is but to add the ads on other pages such as search etc. Those pages don't need the other items on the frontpage such as 'the most downloaded' etc. Ads can use that space instead.
My two cents on the subject. Sorry Bram that these are not 2 real cents...
Yeah, it probably would be best to put the ads on the serach, and other pages. Attacking visitors with google ads on our beautiful homepage... hmnn... no...
I have a feeling this post might end up with quite a few pages...
Who the heck voted 'no'!? hock:
i don't want to see ads period. i know how to find google.
www.google.com.
i don't need an ad for that. besides i get enough of that crap from yahoo etc.
see what's gonna happen is you guys are gonna sell the site to someone eventually and then we are gonna get stuck with this add filed site that will look yahoo and every damn my space page.
i voted no.
i know you guy need help getting things and the likes...but i'd rather see it done differently. i mean if ads are the last resort then i guess you have to do what you have to do right? but when the ads start coming then next thing we know WE LOSE CONTROL OF THE SITE...next thing we know..the schools gonna see how much (if any) the ads will kick down money..they had the site over to some company..microsoft...whoever..and now we are left looking at samples from j lo and all that crap that's out there.
uuuuuuugh..
please no ads. keep this site the only ad free site on the net that still gets a shit load of hits.
also..when the site gets sold to some crappy company they'll start redesigning it with ads RIGHT UP FRONT. to all of you out there who make web pages. WHEN THE FIRST THING I SEE IS AN AD..I DON'T EVEN GO ANY FURTHER. I WON'T EVEN BROWERS YOUR SITE.
there's a lot more people like me out there as well. its bad enough we got pro teams selling naming rights to staduims..lets try and keep that shit off the net.
uhh... how about alternatives like creating the figure of 'supporting member', for example? Adds look like a simple way to get some money, but over the long term... could have many-fold implications? And I also wonder, are adds coherent with FS licensing scheme? I need throughly think about it before voting.
(LS, I see your point since also hate adds, but do you really see any? There are filters, you know...)
I've just add Google ads on my webpage, and I'm already thinking about removing them...
1. When you think about making money with that, think again.
2. Adds, ok, but what kind of ads ? "Free 3D smileys" ? "Cool cellphone tunes"?
I guess I'll wait for my first 100 bucks, and unsuscribe... Which means that they will be on my pages for at least a year...
What about partnership ? See if Shoeps, Neumann, Senneihser would be interested ? Or, even better, some small shop around Barcelona ? That way you would have chances to make some cash for what you need (more than you would with Google), do something that really feets the website, and provide users with ads that would be actually interesting...
I think the most annoying thing with advertisments is when they miss there target. Exept if one of you guys needs viagra...
see i'd be down with say a small company or basically some smaller group. but seriously..dont you think google..yahoo..sony..etc..have enough money?
and dobride...yes i know about filters but you can't filter out yahoo's ads. so when i go to click on my fantasy baseball site..i get this big ass ad about transfomers the movie...LIKE I CARE. I DON'T GO TO THE MOVIES ANYWAY..
see sites like yahoo (and google if it was more than just a simple page) have completely redesigned their pages to benefit the ads. i'm telling you..you start adding ad's to this site and eventually that's what's gonna happen to this one. folks here might be saying..no no no. i'd never let that happen..well guess what..once someone offers you up a million bucks for it..you're gonna sell the site..AND US OUT.
but i guess i can't blame you because i'd probably take the money to (but at least i'd make sure i had input still in the site and at least do everything in my power to keep the ads off)
i am very anti-ads.
but like i said. i don't run the site and you gotta do what ya gotta do to keep this thing going right? but always remember..money talks and bullshit walks. once the school see's how much it can get from google-you better believe they'll sell it to them or to the highest bidder.
then watch..not only will they ad MORE ADS...they MAKE US PAY TO BE MEMBERS OF SOMETHING WE'VE DEVELOPED!
we have enough of that selling out going on here in america...i was hoping you europeans had more sense.
LS, I feel sympathy for your point of view (I also doubt about ads) but the problem is that Freesound is around just because of the university and if they pull out... So, what else do we have?
I suggested EU funding but that is not without problems as well.
that's a good point LG. that's why i said they need to do what they need to do. but i have been sitting here thinking about it and in all reality one of them could keep the site going (if they cared enough) on their own. yeah just change the name of the site..if the school tries to say it own the rights to the name...it sure in the hell don't own our samples. lots of you guys seem to know a lot about web page development and such..you all can't help keep it up if the school pulls the plug? and would they really pull the plug on something that is pretty hot right now..and probably getting more hits and new members-than any other site the school has.
i don't know mybe they would. i doubt that..but maybe they would. but like i said..this community here has become fairly tight and many of us would probably do anything to be part of this and to keep it going. so really-one can't kill a good thing if people love it-no matter how much one might try.
also-if i am correct-don't the samples on here only take up about 35 gigs or so? heck that's not even half of ONE OF MY LAPTOPS...so....i don't see how hard it could be to maintain this. i know there's more involved-but come on-pull some resources together and see what we can do. donations might no be working...yes..but hey folks...STOP GETTING GREEDY..JUST BECAUSE WE SEND YOU A FEW BUCKS TO GET SOME MORE SPACE..BE HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU GOT. maybe that's part of the problem? you all got a few bucks from donations..want more to get more toys...and now we are talking ads.
i don't know about you but i thought freesounds was doing pretty good with just a place to put the sounds and us people doing all the work
no need to pay anyone to go to the school (some famous musican) to record etc...
let some company pay timberaland 600 thousand a track (idiots for doing that to begin with)-this site-i thought-was about the public-not the pro's who are already famous. once you start brining them in-you'll have to change your license agreement aaaaaaaaaaall over again because you best bet that someone will come out and say no no no no..i didn't say you could use that sample for free.
and that's when you'll here me say...ooooooooooh god here we go...
Please, relax and let others express their opinions aswell.
Ads is one thing and selling freesound (?!?!?!) is something completely different... start another topic for conspirative theories trolling, please...
Thanks.
Edit/
Also, Freesound needs "new toys". Try to load any laptop with internet connection with 1000 new registered users per day, plus downloads, plus previews, plus uploads.
All that bandwith sucking, and cpu work, yes.
/Edit
see. this is the sort of shit i'm talking about. yes we are trolling.
come on now do i need to insult you? because i feel like i do. really if you don't want to hear opinions then please..DON'T ASK FOR THEM AND JUST DO WHAT YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO DO.
but like i said
plag is one of the people i was talking about. he'd sell this site out in a second.
excuse me for caring more about the site than you do. and listen. i'm not upset i'm not mad. you fuckers (yes see now that means im annoyned) need to learn how to interpet other's words.
hey how about getting away from the computer for a second and going outside and talking to people
you might learn something
LS, i was and i am talking to you directly.
You are not allowed to flood the thread with your oppinions, let the others express theirs aswell.
There is no problem with the rest of posts.
And remember that we, the ones that helped build/mantain/promote/etc... the site in one way or another, as the rest of you, deserve some respect.
Thank you.
Haven't read the thread yet - yes to Google adds, they are unobtrusive and make money for sites with large hit-rates.
digifish
I know i shouldn't get involved in this, but LS, please can you just calm down. All Bram wanted to know was about Google ads. Not some crazy conspiracy about selling freesound. I've built a few simple sites and i know how much time it eats up. If your saying that these guys arn't dedicated then you need to wake up and smell the coffee. its not as simple as designing and uploading the site, you've got to maintain it. Things in cyberspace are not one off payments, you've got to subscribe.
Someone, something has got to pay for these expenses and if you think that Bram is simply gonna give up freesound? I don't even know the fella but i wouldn't. Not if I've worked this hard. So please can you think before you hit submit, think before you insult all the staff that give up their free time to keep this site up and running so you can benefit.
