hello all,
please clear your cookies and log back in. But... change your URL's to http://www.freesound.org first
more about the change in the blog: http://www.freesound.org/blog/

Did you seriously pay 4000 dollars for this domain? That's fucking ridiculous, should have spent the money on something usefull!
freesound is one of the most USEFUL resource you can find in the whole world wide web
rutgermullerDid rutgermuller seriously say that? Surely it is best to have a site that is quick and easy to access. Be a bit more greatful please. And I will not have site admin sworn at. After all that Bram has done...

don't turn this site into a flamewar, please guys.
rutger: I really do think a good url is worth that amount of money...
you have no idea how many times I've already told people "yes it's at freesound.org"!
before I had to say things like "the url is a bit difficult just put freesound in google", which was pretty damned annoying.

Of course freesound is innovative, usefull and creative. I'm still a fan. But for 4000 Euros I would rather see some technical updates. (nightingale - still stoked for it! would love to see a more flexible way of organizing uploads)
I understand freesound.ORG sounds the most creative commons, but you could have picked something else.
"A few words about this domain name. After a long debate we decided we would buy the domain from buydomains.com. Buydomains.com (deliberately not turned into a link!) is one of those companies that makes money from buying domains on the web, holding them ransom and then selling them for a very high price."
You criticize the company but you still give in to their practices, that's weak imo.
Thus I will note donate for this particular cause.
ps. I think a site like this is partially about discussions like this, so this isn't all bad.
the guy above me probably works in the industry of holding domains for ransom. In the usa its called being a speculator...kinda what they are doing with gas right now..holding the PRICES for ransom..has nothing to do with supply and demand
anyway...be thankful that a guy like bram holds it down when he probably has better things to do...or do you bram? haha..jk chill out.
first of all let me ask a non flamage question... does any money from the t-shirts now go towards the domain name??? secondly, get off brams back... he did a wise thing by making the site easier to find and more importantly to tell people about... now i just say "check out freesound.org" and thats that... before nobody i tried to tell about it could find it that easy... the more people who become a part of this community the better the site gets... as far as technical improvements, yea there could be some... but the site runs fine as is imho... no other site in this "genre" is as awesome to dig through... i mean the "random sample" button alone is amazing not to mention being able to layer multiple samples as you preview them... yes it sucks to pay that much but i think he made a damn good judgement call... in closing i would just like to say "there is a time for action and there is a time for whining like a little bitch" and unless you had your balls cut off by a chainsaw recently, i would say it is time to focus on the former part of that statement.
Go Bram, !
Everyone in the Seattle likes you!. And to all U.S. Dollar Citizens, 4000 = roughly 7000. That's 7 Grand, thats a diploma at a community college, which I find much LESS useful than Freesound. And for the change Bram did you edit it to Redirect, because I have had Freesound off my bookmarks for a while and I never changed it but it always takes me home. (The Freesound Home We are actually lucky Bram doesn't make this a paysite in the first place... Anyway, I think it's maniacal to put anyone down like that.
I do admit freesound.org is the most LOGICAL url for the website's current name. But there's always another good name. It's only because I care about this site's progression that I make this commentary. I'm still waiting for a more flexible way of managing files, which would mean I would upload more files, which would mean a higher google rating - which might be more important than the most logical domain name. But I guess I'm a little late with my ranting. So sorry, forget about it. And I'm sorry for the swearing.
suonho

That's my whole point. What's worse, getting on Bram's back, or kissing his ass ? Charitable organisations in particular are the room for discussions like this topic, but like I said, i'm a little late so I wish freesound all the best with its new nice URL.
ok ok... rutger as i said before i see your point... but you did call bram (or his actions) "weak" ... which is a tad abrasive (and kind of shitty)... and now your saying there is ass-kissing taking place... dude next time you help to create (and continue to improve) something as amazing and internationally impacting as thefreesoundproject, maybe people will praise (and stand up for) you as well. your point was and is valid but you made it in an offensive manner... so, um, well, people took offense.. (which i'm sure was expected to some degree).. anyway if we were "ass kissing" we wouldn't be flaming the hell out of this thread... peace.
I typed ass-kissing to oppose the statements that told I was getting on Bram's back. Both are exaggerations. You don't have to tell me that freesound is a pretty revolutionary website, that wasn't the discussion at all. I think it's weak not really logical for a creative commons organisation to give in to such a commercial "scam". I personally would have sought another solution, that's why I won't donate for this cause. But what's done is done, so I'll learn to live with it and will try to control my anger more in the future (seriously).
A constructive question: Was there a discussion on the topic of changing the domain name? I'm in favour of such polls/discussions on commons sites. I might have missed it because I haven't been active here for a while.
hey guys,
rutger: the decision was made without consulting the site, ... but I'm pretty sure people prefer to use freesound.org instead of the longer url.
anyway, it's done, and although I understand Rutger's critisism I see buying the URL as a good way to solidify our name as a kind of "brand name".
I have no problem with you not donating, donations are a voluntary process!
And about Nightingale (although this is not the thread), it's still being worked on very actively, but you won't be able to "see" anything until in a while!
I *personally* see spending that large amount of money as a good cause, but why would I mind other people having a different idea!
