    freesound.org and SecondLife.com

    Greetings,

I did a bit of searching but can't find any answers to this.
I make objects in the virtual world of Second Life and sell it and was wondering how this would work with freesound.org since I have never used freesound.org before.

For example: I make a car in Second Life and need a idle sound for it. Am I allowed to get a sample from here and use it in Second Life and sell the car with that sound? Attribution is a must of course so do I include the name of the creator of the sample and link in the product description/notecard?

you can if the samples creator's user agrement says so.

so for example mine is set to allow anyone to use and sell my stuff with out asking. but not all allow this. so ask first.

Thanks for the reply. Where would I generally see the user's agreement?

The Freesound licence allows commercial use in the real world without additional permissions from the creator ...

To sample, mash-up, or otherwise creatively transform this work for commercial or noncommercial purposes

So why should it be different for the virtual world ?

So I should be able to use the sounds with no problem as long as I credit the creator of the sound?

    An exception is advertisement ...

You may not use this work to advertise for or promote anything but the work you create from it.

You'd need to contact the Freesound creator and obtain their permission for use in an advertisement.

[ If you asked to use one of mine in an advert I'd want some real (not virtual) dollars, we're not all as generous as LS ]

    Thanks for the replies!

So ok, just so that I get this all straight. Its ok if I use sounds from freesound.org in my virtual projects and sell them as long as I give credit to the creator of the sound?
Advertisements is not allowed unless it is the advert "the work you create from it."??? What exactly does that mean?

If you use the Freesound on an album track you can use the part of album track containing the Freesound as an advert for the album, but not in an advert for something else, e.g. dog-food.

[This is my understanding of the terms : I’m not the Freesound lawyer]

Actually, L$ can be converted into real dollars. What is the rate nowadays? Still about L$300 = 1 USD?

That is my understanding too. But of course, when in doubt: contact the sample creator.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

I understand the use of freesound.org samples in Second Life a lot more now, and hopefully this topic can help anyone else that was wondering about it ^^.

    Thanks again.
