Hi everyone,
A while back, I was fortunate to happen on this forum while the nonprofit I work for (www.pkids.org) was building a website (www.getvaxed.org) that required sound effects. We were and are grateful for the opportunity to use Freesounds for that website, as they definitely enhanced the project.
We are now undertaking a new project that involves the creation of another website, this one for tweener girls (roughly ages 9-12). The goal of the website is to offer simple health information in a fun environment. We want to offer them activities, such as games and greeting card creation, and also freebies, such as cell phone wallpaper images and ringtones.
My question is whether or not we could use Freesounds as or in ringtones. After reviewing the summary of the legal document, I think the issue is that if we're distributing the sounds as ringtones, all recipients of the ringtones would have to be made aware of the conditions of use:
"For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do this is with a link to this web page."
We could certainly meet those requirements on our website. We've also confirmed that our website is in compliance with COPPA. Could anyone comment on whether or not usage of Freesounds in/as cellphone ringtones would violate the Creative Commons License?
I think that would be fine if you have the creators acknowledged on the site. With the license for the sound specified.
I could be wrong but it sounds like you're just redistributing the sounds in the same way free sound does. Crediting the author and saying what license its released under. Would you just be hosting the files then just like FreeSound?

Thanks for your reply! I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by hosting -- I assume you mean users would download the sounds from our server. That would be true, for the reason that I'm fairly certain we'll have to edit for length and format, if nothing else.
I think what we will do, in addition to crediting as specified by the terms for use etc, is also contact the sound creators -- let them know what exactly we're doing and how we're doing it -- to verify their approval.
Thanks again!
I was just going to say, you should take a look at cell phone wallpaper site they have ringtones and wallpapers, and perhaps you can work with them or see what they are doing!

If you have commercial website = you're making money with it, I think it is violating CC License if you distribute freesound samples as ringtones, even if you would have edited them shorter etc.
I don't think COPPA members can distribute their productions under CC Licence, so if you pay money for COPPA (?) it goes to shared pot and does not return for contributors of the sound samples.
Is your project already online, for checking it?
Hi friend I have an old fax machine & TV, and I was wondering how should I discard an old fax machine (that still works) and a 1993 TV? Is there an environmentally friendly way? Should I bring it to a shop where they can salvage any parts or do I just throw it in the trash? It seems like it might take less time to do the latter.
