How to credit a LOT of sounds....

I am creating a short educational film for children and am considering using some of the sound effects on this website (I also have recorded some of my own and have purchased other sound FX). Even thought it it less than 20 minutes long, I have an estimated 625 sounds that I will be using. I like a lot of the sounds I've heard, but there is no way I can credit 625 or contact that many to ask permission. So my question is, in the credits can I just list that some of the sounds were from www.freesound.org under the license agreement CC Sample Plus 1.0?

This product will be sold commercially (not for commercials)and a profit will be made (hopefully).

Help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Unless I hear that I can use the sounds in the manner I mentioned above, I won't use any of the sounds from here (www.freesound.org). This really is a great website, and if someone does have an answer to the question please post. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to know!

    I have one solution.

Right now I am building software that reads different types of data from different pages on freesound.org. For a demo how simple the output is, check out the recent post at http://openfreesounddata.blogspot.com/. What the software is doing is parsing user aliases, user id numbers (found in the html code) and the file amount that they have uploaded.

I was thinking that I could make some changes to the software and have it parse your attribution list (found in the control panel section in the navigation to the left), parsing all the info, and then programmatically going through and private-messaging or emailing (if provided) each individual user. And as a fail safe, have a post in the forums with all the users involved, and a notice asking each individual user in the list to post how they'd like to be attributed. All the data to accomplish this is there, it's just a matter of doing it; and it would be a lot of work on my end.

Of course there is also the matter of whether or not each entry in the attribution list was actually used in the project. A

Also, I just checked your 'files downloaded' and it shows that you've only downloaded 4 files! http://www.freesound.org/usersDownloads.php?id=1449221. I assume then that you downloaded all the files under another alias.

In any case, let me know what you think.

    P.S.
    You misspelled goddess.

I have not download the over 600 needed, because if I can't use them I do not want to mix them with my other sound FX.

Your software sounds like a great idea! I will keep it in mind for my next film. I have started the foley work already for this film, and it needs to be finished within two weeks so I will be using only FX that I create or from other sources that don't require individual credit.

PS- I know -- when I first set up that name (with other things such as email and xfire) goddess had already been used, so I just dropped a d. That and I'm a mere mortal, so it seems fitting.

    Hello there,

You may find the answer you seek in this post:

    http://www.freesound.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1724

Attribution is a key part of the license terms. If you cannot attribute the sample properly, or get permission from each copyright holder to use their samples without attribution, then you cannot use those samples. It's that simple really.

For your convenience, I will paste:

    Halleck
Can I use freesound samples in my game/song/website/film/etc?
Yes! As long as you properly attribute the sample, you may reproduce, remix, and incorporate the sample into your work any way you like.

How do I attribute samples that I use?
See "How do I credit/attribute?" in the FAQ.

What if I can't attribute the samples properly?
If you are for some reason unable to satisfy the attribution requirement of the Sampling Plus license, you can't use the sample unless you get permission from the sample author. In this case, you can try to contact the sample author. In many cases, they may give permission if you ask nicely, or will license it in exchange for a fee.

I hope that helped. Good luck.

    Thanks guys!

I was afraid I'd read it correctly. I do believe people should get credit for their work, but for what I'm needing the credits would be longer than the project. This is a great place for small projects and the science of collecting that many sounds is an outstanding idea!

a.e. good luck with the software. I've written code before and I know how hard it can be. It is definitely a worthwhile project!

Spleencast, thanks for your input. I am hoping this post will help others who have the same question as to what to do about needing a lot of sounds!

I did find a relatively cheap package of royalty free sounds that may help anyone else that is in need of a lot of sound FX: http://instantsoundfx.com/?id=201193

There are many others like this, just make sure they are royalty free before using them on your project!

    Bram,

Thanks! That will work perfectly. Since I have already have a little over 400 sounds not from here, I may be able to do the second one you listed. But if that doesn't work, then the first will be perfect!
