I am a total newbie to recording sound.
I have a laptop, a Korg Workstation.
Im looking to get a nice entry level mic and some decent monitors.

What else do I need to get going?

Like I said, total newbie, so go easy on the techie terminology!

Sorry to answer with a questions, but...

1. What do you want to record?

2. What is your budget? If it's big I promise not to spend it all...just that if it's $400 for mic and speakers I know where to start

Hi there! There are a few really good recording programs out there. I use Adobe Audition 2.0 ($349 from Adobe, $149 student price). There is also Sony Acid Studio 6.0 (I think was around $120 - maybe less). Both work on the same principle that you create single "tracks" of each sound/instrument in record/edit mode that you want, and then combine them in the "mix." Adobe's tutorials are great. Sony doesn't have oner but may be a simpler program. You can download a free trial of Audition and it is well worth it! You get 30 days to try it out, then you either buy it or your trial expires (which is really that you can still use it, but you have to go through a few hoops to get back into the program).

For actual gear between your instrument and your computer: you will need an outboard mixer and direct box for anything. Behringer makes wonderful products. And not too expensive generally. There is a guy on Ebay who sells some inexpensive gear and also a very helpful downloadable booklet on building a home recodring studio. Do a search there and contact him. he is honest and fair and has experience and good advice. I bought a sound card and a mixer from him (both new) for under $150!!!! Plus, he's open to questions....

OOOPS! Forgot: good vocal mics are pretty easy to fin at GuitarCenter InstrumentPro and MusiciansFriend - all ".com"s. MONITORS: the BEST, I think, are Behringer Truth active matched pairs (2030's or 2031s?) - again at those three gear websites.
