both dblue.glitch and LiveCut are suberb for glitches!

for ambient sounds you can try ProtoPlasm wich is a very good machine!

Oh and Audiopaint (turns images into sound (but you can recover th eimage via a spectrogram, very neat))

Maybe a bit late, but I can certainly recommend Argeïphontes Lyre for very strange sound generation and destruction. Also includes some interesting video generators...Weird, weird, weird interface and only OS X.

If you really want some software with which you can do both (glitch & ambient) and much much much more, I can recommand Native Instruments Reaktor! Or Max/MSP...

Or for a free(as in freedom) alternative to max/msp and reaktor: Pure Data

i tried to download protoplasm, but all i get is a dll file and acro reAder file...no synthesizer... what am i doing wrong??

it is a VST plug in and you need a HOST to run it...

try this...

it's an ASIO driver for all soundcards/sound chips
