I've tried multiple distortion/noise techniques, but still cannot reproduce a particular vocal distortion heard in Star Wars. Specifically, Episode IV. The effect in question can be heard on the line "We're passing through the magnetic field..." starting at 3:12 in the following video: http://youtu.be/hvc70ptopqw?t=3m12s

So - I guess my question is, given the default tools in Audacity, how would I go about getting something at least remotely close to that?

This effect is nothing elaborate, its just ring modulation.

Audacity doesnt come with such a tool, but I suggest you download this free plug-in to achieve the effect you want.

The zip has the plug in and instructions on how to install it so it works with audacity.
