I sometimes use Firefox browser's 'Download Helper' add on to save Youtube videos, but is it possible to extract the sound to a file?
I'm just looking for ways to make up interesting background noise files. I have severe tinnitus, and have been recommended to have backgroung sounds permanently on in the house. So I need to experiment, and maybe pass my findings on to the tinnitus sufferers community.
Thanking you all in advance for any assistance.
Pete.

Google knows the way...
Thanks for the tips NoiseCollector.
I am trying them out.
Though, foolishly, I forgot to mention that I'm using Ubuntu Linux with Firefox. So the 'listentoyoutube.com' option ought to me my best bet.
I'm also asking around on the Ubuntu forums.
Thanks again.
No problem, if you can get them to tell you how to get my Compaq EVO to display graphics past the splash screen in Ubuntu any time soon, I may be back as well.
To locally save flash video I use a firefox addon, Unplug. Obvioulsy it works under both Ubuntu or XP, but check your version of Firefox as this addon highly version-dependent.

And extracting audio from any video should not be difficult using the 'record what is heard' option in your sound card, most have this option
Also, isn't Freesound a better place than Youtube to look for interesting audio stuff?? But what do I know...
D
Actually I get my sounds from flickr, my videos from ebay and my pictures from ccmixter.
In the middle of all this, I decided to let Ubuntu upgrade itself, and it went wrong. Probly my fault, I mess things up in a very skilled manner.
So that PC is fubared till I get a system disk that can actually overcome the problem.
The new one has Vista installed, so I'll start again.
Just a quick thing regarding how you need constant background noise:
If you're not familiar with it already, longplayer.org is a 1000 year long song that has been playing for 9 years already... it's kind of an ambient piece made with tibetan singing bowls, so if you need background noise playing constantly then that might do you for the rest of the millennium!
Thanx for the tip PLaGuE CeLL, I'll check it out.
In the mean time, I'm pretty disappointed with Vista. And somewhat with Firefox3
Hmm, I guess it's an interesting project. but ringning bowls are not for me! They sound too much like my actual tinnitus! hock: :?
I need alternative natural sounds. Thanx anyway dude.
There's also As Slow As Possible. It's not designed for 1000 years though, it is only 639 years.
Blimey! hock: Finally, something I can dance to!
This is really strange.
I searched for the distance between my location and the church where the piece is played and it got baclk: 639 km.
This is obviously an omen, so now we NEED to go listen to the next note change on febr the 5th.

What a musical moment!!!!!
.......it doesn't get bigger than this
anyone there?
Well! I'm back after a while! Hahah! ok a big while!
And I'm using Ubuntu exclusively now, with a super simple program called 'Outrec', it just records the speaker output.
.
SOLVED!

LoL, just to 'quote' you one more time. I hear some others have trouble running Ubuntu on Compaq machines. there's even a website called ihatecompaq. Haha, sorry. Heh.
