i know we no longer use reel-to-reel recorders but i still need sound fx for them. such as;
the machine rolling w tape rustle sound (no music just the sound of blank tape)
the take-up reel going round and round with the flap sound of the loose tape end.
thanks in advance for your trouble.
this is for an art project.
hi david, thanks so much for your response. i'm glad someone still has their reel-to-reel. the sounds i'm looking for are;
1) the button sound that turns the tape transport on. they were usually this huge hand-held turn switch.
2) just the sound of the tape running through the transport mechanism - say about 1 min or so.
3) the hand-winding of the tape onto the take-up spool - a few good turns.
4) the flap flap flap flap of the tape once the take-up reel is full and the tape just goes loosely round and round - a min or so.
i am working at 48K 16bit wav or aiff.
this is really VERY nice of you. is there anything that you are in need of? would be glad to return the favour if i am able. either way, thanks for your contact over this.
jeff
OK, I have uploaded them to the FreeSound FTP but also to my own web page so you can grab them sooner than they may become available from FreeSound.

000 is the On/Off Play switch
001 is the Flapping tape
004 is the Hand winding of the reel
005 is the tape playing through the machine (Mike inputs turned way up just to hear anything)
I have 2 other versions of 001 since I had trouble making the tape flap for a full minute. An 002 is the reel slowed by friction on my hand and 003 is a clean cut end to the tape (as opposed to one that has obviously been well worn from years of 'flapping') They all sound quite different. I will upload these last 2 soon.
The Reel to Reel machine I recorded was:

ok david.... that was above and beyond really. some of those sounds will be absolutely perfect. let me know if there is anything you ever need. i have a fairly extensice fx collection. i hope that others will also be able to make good use of your recordings once they are on freesound. you must have used a zoom h4n or the like. i have one and recognize the file labeling that it spits out "ste-000.wav" etc.....
thanks again for taking the trouble david.
best,
jeff
Except for an experiment on my dog barking, these are the very first sounds I have recorded - and yes, they were done with the Zoom H4n (a wonderful piece of kit).
Took the H4n out for a walk today to see what else I could record but there was too much wind and I should have brought some headphones along to monitor. I'll need a 'dead cat' if I am to record outside but may invest in a Rode Blimp next pay for my M3 microphone (assuming it fits)
Cheers
David
tip. if you are recording outdoors w the h4n, always, always use a windscreen. those mics are the most air pressure sensitive i have ever used. for voice-over recordings i also use a pop screen if i plan on using the built-in mics. here's some more advice...... don't waste your money on the "redhead" custom wind screen that you see posted all over the place if you search "ZOOM". they are no better than the foam filter that the h4n came with (which is not that bad really). i expected more after getting suckered in by their windy hawaii video's that could only have been produced in post as a trick - that sadly worked on me.
more the fool,
jeff
from what i've heard the fur thing will work reasonably well. here is the url to a zoom user group that i am part of;
http://www.2090.org/zoom/bbs/viewforum.php?f=15&sid=86c12083eacb4fc5895a808b0208c538
the topic has come up before. this was my posting w the same concern;
http://www.2090.org/zoom/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=14149
ignore the praise given for the redhead. i think the guy who makes them monitors the site for bussiness. you will also see a link there to the windy video i told you about. ignore it. try posting the question again and see what happens.
for my part i am going to go to a music supply place and try out different windscreens with a fit for a wide diaphram mic and see how those work and fit.
M3 microphone (assuming it fits)
Dead Cat does fit the M3 barrel though I don't know if you would have enough room for a mic clip. The Dead cat is about 200mm long.
Dead Kitten fits Zoom H2 perfectly and would go on something a bit bigger. H2 is 60mm X 30mm .
A blimp is the way to go if you can afford one.
