Hi all, I'm Steve... I just spent a bit of time answering questions about copyrighted classical music in another thread...

I studied copyright law in college and would love to help out / answer any questions anybody might have. So, please ask away. I'm not a lawyer, but I remember quite a bit... but I think as a forum we can figure out most of the questions. If anyone is actually a lawyer or is familiar with these laws as well (especially out of the U.S.) please correct any mistakes. I had this stuff pounded into my head for a few years at school before I changed my major to music technology, but it's been a few years. I feel that if we remain educated about what we're able to contribute, it'll really help the freesound project grow.

If this becomes a popular area of discussion, perhaps we should have a section of the forum reserved for copyright-related questions?[/url]

(Oof, I just spent 20 minutes on a post and wasn't even finished and then Firefox just shut down on me. Very frustrating.)

Yeah, copyright is an important subject and this is a good place for discussion. There's a lot of misinformation and ignorance out there. I mean some people are confused about the mere basics.

But also, since these laws keep getting more and more restrictive, I think it's important for us to talk about not just what the laws *are* but what we think they *should* be.

There was a lot more I had to say, but I'm gonna stop it here so I can be sure this actually gets posted.

(%#$^& internet.)

Question related to copyright issues :

I am trying to find music pieces and sounds in order to add these pieces to my (non commercial) podcast (that i am currently in the process of building up).

Can I use sounds downloaded from this website, directly as they are offered, with no specific changes, on my podcast ?

Or are these sounds only for sampling / mixing, and not for use on podcasts or other transmission systems ?

You can use them, as long as you "reference" them.
Taht's why there is the attribution list:

OK, thanks.
So I should add this on the homepage of my blog, for instance ? Is that it ?

you should add the attribution wherever you use the sounds. If you add a link to the blogcast on your blog, add the attribution in your blog item - or wherever you think it should be. As long as it's clear who made the samples...
