I attached two microphones to a metal pylon. One of those with electric wires in the top. This is the sound of the electric wires, while the wind is working them. You can also hear noise from the pylon itself. It's kind of a dark almost drone like sound, with some metallic noise on top. I have removed the "hiss" from the windblown grass, from around the field by equalizing a bit, and by normal noise removal. I think i got a pretty good recording out of it.
Recorded with a Sony HI-MD walkman MZ-NH1 minidisc recorder and two WM-61A Panasonic microphones Edited in Audacity

Oh forgot to mention earphones can be used as contact mics too ... http://www.ehow.com/how_5103296_make-headphones-mic.html
$9 is the cheapest I can find for a ready made contact mic ... http://jamie8558159.envendee.com/tag/korg-cm-100l-clip-on-contact-microphone-for-tuners-retail-16-00-sale-only-8-43/ One can be made from a piezoelectic transducer ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxfLnMFk2OE&feature;=related, a pre-amp will probably be required.
I would say that too. But a result like this, without those cool contact microphones, is for me acceptable. And a bit cheaper ;-)
Imaginative subject matter, but the recording could have been better with a contact microphone
