A Green (well it is Paddy's day!) Woodpecker in my garden 17-Mar-2008. Usually he only calls once or twice, but this time he called about 5 times and I had time to capture two calls. Sony MD and ECM907 mic. Filtered.

Many thanks, Acclivity! Will be one of the bird calls in my interactive Garden of Earthly Delights. There is also a very recognisable one in Bosch's painting of the same name!

Hah the wonderful yaffle - great to see in your garden! Reminds me of a friend who, back in the 70's became interested in bird watching after he had been with me a few times - he went out on his own and rang me when he got home - "I've seen a parrot!". Of course he had seen a yaffle which was confirmed when he looked it up. But a common mistake as it is so striking.

Mike, even a short description like yours can teach a lot (Yaffle? Paddy? Green?)

Yaffle \Yaf"fle\, n. [Probably imitative of its call or cry.]
The European green woodpecker (Picus, or Genius, viridis).
It is noted for its loud laughlike note. Called also eccle,
hewhole, highhoe, laughing bird, popinjay, rain
    bird, yaffil, yaffler, yaffingale, yappingale,
    yackel, and woodhack.
