The sounds in this recording are electrical impulses that travel around the globe through the atmosphere. I captured them using an extremely sensitive electrical field amplifier that I built myself. It converts electrical noise in the atmosphere and Ionosphere directly to audio. You can find plans in the internet. (Look for "vlf radio" or "natural radio") On this recording you will hear a few different things: lots of fast clicks are lightning strikes. The radio is sensitive enough to pick up lightning strikes over 1000 miles away! (1600Km) You can also hear "tweaks", which have a kind of pinging sound. These sounds are the result of the noise of a bolt of lightning interacting with the Ionosphere. Since the Ionosphere is a dispersive medium, different frequencies of the noise travel at different rates. This recording was made on a perfectly clear, cloudless day.
