November 11th, 2007

I finally got myself a decent preamp and tried it out at the local Veteran's Day parade. The festivities (that I recorded) started out with a 21-gun salute, followed by a flyover of a vintage WW2 fighter plane. I knew the gun salute was coming, but I did not know about the fighter plane so I missed the first part of that as it was taking off from the nearby air strip. After recording the plane I walked over to the parade route, where I found a fairly quiet spot (yes on my side of the street there was no one else for 50 feet in either direction) and recorded things in the parade that I thought were interesting. This recording is a 21 gun salute from three field artillery cannons, recorded in the middle of a large field, not far from an airport. You can also hear the blasts echo off nearby buildings. No processing except normalization and fade in/out.

Cool recording. I'm doing a synth version of the 1812 with reap percussion, and this will do very nice for the guns.
