By request, the result of decoding a raw Mid-Side stereo file (20170423_raw.midside.wav) to 'regular' stereo. In this decoded sample the proportion of central and lateral signal are equal (i.e., 50/50), but one can change this at will. Actually, whats cool of M/S recording is that, when decoding, you can tweak the mix. For example, one could increase the relative importance of the lateral component (i.e., the sound from the figure-8 mic) or from the centre (i.e. the shotgun ). Or the opposite, set the focus on the centre of the sound image by increasing its relative contribution to the final mix.
Gear used Sennheiser MKH 60 + MKH 30 into Shure FP24 preamp, and Tascam DR-60D MkII recorder. Decoded to mid-side stereo with free Voxengo VST plugin.
