Unloading a fishing boat in the harbour of Vlissingen in the Netherlands.
You hear a ships crane unloading of full plastic case with fish, a fork-lift-truck transport the cases, the deep humming of an incoming and mooring large fishing vessel, some harbour traffic, people (male) talking, sometimes a seagull in the distance.
History of the fishing-fleet
In the Middle Ages the city of Vlissingen was the most important fishing town of the region around the Westerschelde river. In the seventeenth century it lost the importance entirely. Only at the end of the nineteenth century, this changed when a large part of the Arnemuidse fishermen moved to Vlissingen because a new dam cut there city from the river sea.
In 1925, the Vlissingen fishing fleet was already a significant industry. The fleet in the fishing harbor, the former English Harbour, was counted 25 fishing boats. The total crew was 96 heads. An other 30 ships from he city of Arnemuiden used the fishing port of Vlissingen. The old fishing harbour had to be dammed as part of the Delta Plan. This plan was made because of the 1953 flood. So this recording is made in the new harbour. The old harbour is now a marina for yachts, where I made some other recordings. (search; Vlissingen harbour klankbeeld ).
