June 3rd, 2008

June 2nd 2008 civil defense siren warning system test.
Sirens heard: in the order they fire up:
(1)Maunalua Bay- Thunderbolt 1000T, super-high pitched. It was a close 1/4 mile away from my position. You can hear the siren's supercharger.
(2)Niu Valley Shopping Center- STL-10: 1 mile away, busy blowing out the eardrums of customers at the KFC it's located by.
(3)Kuliouou valley- Modulator 3012: 3/4 mile away
(4)Hanauma Bay - Thunderbolt 1000T, normal. 2 miles away, on top of a hill.
(5)Hahaione valley - EOWS 612, faintly heard in the distance after all the other sirens quit. Sounded for more than 4 minutes. 1-1/4 miles away.

Background noises: annoying construction, nice beach waves, light traffic noise, minimal wind.

Recorded with a Roland Edirol R-09: AGC off, low gain, low pass filter on, input level: 30 (max).

I always wondered if that were to happen. I'll have to ask the communications officer here about that scenario. I would think Civil Defense would blast an alert cycle for the standard 3 minutes (but no longer than 10 minutes: that's usually beyond the duty cycle for most electromechanical sirens) on the whole siren system, broadcast the alert over TV & radio, and use the newer voice-capable electronic sirens to broadcast the voiced warning message as well.

It's strange how some sirens here, at random, sound a 3-4 minute alert(like a real disaster) on test day, like that EOWS 612 you hear faintly wailing long after the others quit.

btw digifish, your in-cabin jet recordings are the best. I joined this website about a year ago just to d/l them :P

Ahhh, so I did some investigation and learned that this is part of a Tsunami warning system.

So what happens when a Tsunami decides to come on the first working day of the month? :)
