An old school computer just chatting along, or a Sci-Fi data transmission?
Actually this is a Low Frequency (LF)/ Very low frequency (VLF) radio recording. As it turns out you can make your own VLF radio from your sound card, and it can record frequencies up to 22 KHz using 44,1KHz sampling. Apart from being able to listen to lightning strikes, and ionospheric phenomenon you can also listen to the data communications to nuclear submarines.
To record this I used a sample rate of 196KHz (gives a frequency band of 98 KHz), and a loop of insulated wire coupled to my sound card. The data transmission was at 60KHz which is above the audible range. To make it audible I pitch shifted the audio 3 octaves using a FFT pitch shifter.
You can hear the data transmission coming on, at 4 min a BEEP is clearly audible, at 12 min the data transmission is over and other faint transmissions might lurk in the static.

the bandwith is so small but still it sounds like it lacks quality somewhere..
