Description by FreqMan A stereo recording of an old style telephone. This is a genuine Bell System Ringer Model 687A (8/70) made by Western Electric. It's a tan box about 15x13x6 cm. It was usually placed in a warehouse or far from the main phone so people would know they had a call. Recorded with a Sony ECM-99 Stereo Microphone from about 2 feet away to a SonyMD recorder. There may be a little room noise with amplification.

Your recordings are wonderful! Like Visievion, I was looking for this exact ring to use as a cell phone ringer.

A note, though... in your description, you're selling this effect short. It really ought to say, "Sounds exactly like a real desk phone from Ma Bell!" This is the standard phone ring that many of us remember from our earlier years.

For cell phone ringer use (depending on the phone's ringer volume), folks may want to raise the overall level a bit, not due to a low recording level, but just to bring it full scale for the cell phone. I normalized to -.1dB and it translated nicely.

It's a beautiful recording, and thanks for making it available!

Ok a newbie question. How do I turn this giant file size into a small mp3 to use on my mobile phone? It's Motorola W375.

Searched the ofrum but couldn't find it there.

Great sound, but it keeps opening in a quicktime plugin, which I cant save. Is there a link directly to the file so I can save it to disk instead of using the http link?

-->papercuts06: if you import into iTunes with your (preferences > advanced > importing > import using) set to mp3 that will do it. also Xylisoft converter, which is shareware but you can download for free and it will work to convert this file.

-->angeliemonette: how to get on phone, depends on phone. try attaching it to an email and sending it to your boss's phone's email addy. or use bluetooth if you've got it. OR if phone has basic browser access can input the URL of the download into the browser and save.

Reminds me of the phone ringing sound in the movie "The Matrix". I wonder if the sound of the phone ringing that you hear in the handset also exists. That particular sound has not been heard for a long time. When I was a kid in the 70s, there was a joke line I used to call that had that sound. Thank you sharing this wonderful sample.

This has to go into my cellphone whether I want it or not. The MIDI ringer is OK, but it is far from as this top notch high class recording this is. I just want to give an advice. To get the ringer sounding a bit more realistic you could cut away the initial silence and cut away the second ring since it is faded. What you have left is a loopable ringer. 10/10

Perfect. Exactly what I've been looking for to use as a cell phone ringtone. I wanted a simple, clear, "real" phone sound instead of funky music and junk that comes with all new cell phones.

I worked at an obsolete, though fully functioning, factory for a year where we had a ringer exactly like this. Hearing your recording reminds me of scampering around the scaffolding to get to the phone. Nice post,

I want this on my phone, but I cannot figure out how to get it to my phone. I don't have email on my phone, I tried to input the address, but it just tried to download it and said it didn't support this file type. I have a Verizon LG VX9400.
