Even the Sennheiser MKH40 microphones sound pretty hissy, if used on a windy day in Glen Lednock / Scotland. The strange sound you hear is that of the common snipe. To record I used a Fostex FR2-le recorder from Oade Brothers.

Is the snipe the low-pitched eerie UFO-sound heard most prominently starting around -0:039:00?

This is a sound that had me mystified for many years. There was one particular time I heard it - by Loch Laidon in May 1993, while I was waiting at Rannoch station for the evening train back to Fort William, having just completed for the third time one of my mammoth classic single day walks - from Corrour station, to Ben Alder and then down to Rannoch station. I incorporated something of that experience in the third (final) movement of my 4th Symphony (Highland Wilderness), with improvisations on the snipe sound haunting one particular section. It was actually not till last year that I finally established the identity of the bird producing that strange sound.

Thank you for this little memento of that very special experience!
