River de Waal in the Netherlands in the summer.
Birds and playing kid audible. Far shipping noise in background.![]()
About the picture
The banks of the Waal on a quiet summer’s day. A wide river flows calmly by, its water glistening gently beneath a sky filled with large, white clouds. On this side of the river, a groyne juts out into the Waal: a short, sturdy stone dam standing at right angles to the bank. At the end of the groyne stands a tall metal radar reflector. The reflector stands on a concrete base and forms a clear landmark.
Next to the groyne, close to the water’s edge, stand a mother and her child. The little boy is playing with the pebbles on the bank and his mother lets him get on with it.
The bank consists of sand, grass and low vegetation. On the other side of the river lie open fields and trees of the floodplain. In the distance stand tall electricity pylons, their wires criss-crossing the horizon.
The light is soft through the clouds, giving the whole scene a peaceful, summery atmosphere.

About the picture
The banks of the Waal, but now you’re looking upstream, towards the east. The river’s depth is now clearly visible. The water is lightly rippled by the wind and reflects the grey and white clouds filling the sky.
The foreground consists of a mixture of dry, yellow-brown grasses and low green plants. A narrow strip of sand leading to the water’s edge forms a lovely little beach.
On the left of the picture, you can just make out the stern of a boat that has sailed past. Further towards the centre, further in the distance, a second boat is sailing — smaller due to the distance, but still clearly recognisable.
On the opposite bank of the river, you can see a natural bank with bushes and trees.
The sky is mostly cloudy, with large masses of clouds that make the light soft and diffuse.
