A warm day by the river in the Netherlands. Listen to my audio story (and read the text for who can not see the pictures).
People swim on the other side. The wind is blowing hard, but the high temperature makes it wonderful here.
Several smaller pleasure boats pass by, but also inland vessels, after which the waves crash against the breakwater.
Because I also have a hydrophone hanging in the water, you can unobtrusively hear the sound of the ship's propellers.
The river Maas is only about 200m wide here.
I am sitting here in the floodplains near the village of Bokhoven. There is a lot of grass and there are few obstacles such as trees and bushes to give the river space when there is high water. It gives the landscape a typical Dutch river landscape. Across the river the farmer is harvesting. You can sometimes hear the tractor. Farming is still practiced in these floodplains, but the view on farmers in these environments is changing more towards nature management. Due to the risk of flooding, no more construction will be done in these areas in the future.
In the Netherlands it is very important to practice water management. In winter we have too much and in summer we have too little water. We have had water boards here for centuries, but the government has now also placed a national manager above them.
26% of the Netherlands is below sea level. Of the land above sea level, 29% is also protected by dikes.
