Hello.

I live in Spain.

I have downloaded several sounds from this website under Attribution License for commercial purposes in Second Life (always embedded in my creation of "gestures"), and I intend to continue doing it smile.

I have never changed the original name of the sound (example: 111035_soundbyter-com_www-soundbyter-com-peaceful-bells).

When I have cut and converted the sounds online (if needed), some words have been added to the initial name (example: 111035_soundbyter-com_www-soundbyter-com-peaceful-bells (online converted to wav with.../online cut with...).

I sell my gestures in Second Life, but customers can't see the attribution, unless they open the item to "explore" it.

Is that a proper way to attribute sounds?

I have sent an e-mail to freesound.org, but still no answer.

Thanks for replying.

Hello IrisMorning

It would be good to have a look at your attribution directly to make sure it's correct. May I suggest taking some screenshots.

What you have just described sounds fine. You have attributed the author(s) in conjunction with the material you are publishing. There is no obligation to state the credit directly next to your material, you should however always give the correct information somewhere easily accessible and unambiguous. For example, being directed to a separate page with the credit(s) via a link is acceptable, as long as it's not hidden from view (what I mean by unambiguous).

You are allowed to change the name of the sound for the material, however, not when giving attribution; the name of the file should be stated exactly how it was published by the author. This is partly to facilitate correct results using a search engine.

You have to provide a URI (uniform resource indicator). URI in this context could refer to either the index number that Freesound uses to catalogue the sound, which is already part of the filename when you download e.g. 111035, but also the direct web address (URL) linking the original source material. In your case it will be both.

CreativeCommons.org states for proper attribution:

If supplied [the license], you must provide the name of the creator and attribution parties, a copyright notice, a license notice, a disclaimer notice, and a link to the material. CC licenses prior to Version 4.0 also require you to provide the title of the material if supplied, and may have other slight differences.

Hope this helps. smile

Hello, Headphaze.

You're being extremely useful!
Thanks for the reply.
I have 3 screenshots:

1. How sounds are stored in Second Life Inventory (avatar's inventory).
2. What can be seen if the customer opens the gesture made with these sounds (and other resources).
3. What does a customer receive and use when they purchase a gesture made with these sounds (and other resources).

Where can I send you the files?

TIA!

Oh great, i'm glad. cool

You can use a free image hosting website to upload. Then it will give you a direct link, just post that here.

No registration required for these. However if you do register, you can delete the image if you so desire.

Thanks for the screenshot.

It looks to me like we have a slight problem. Is this the only place where the audio file and it's information is seen? Is there not another menu page available when you click on the individual sound file?

To me it looks as though there isn't a way to give a link to the original (something that is recommended as per the Creative Commons CC-BY license). So it's not realistically abiding by the attribution requirements. Also, the attribution information isn't clearly stated, for example the author's name is in the file name but it is not really clear what is what.

I appreciate you trying to make sure it's right, but this i'm afraid is not correct.

My previous post explains the requirements. Is there a way to improve your attribution by attaching a credit to the audio file?

Yes, Headphaze.

Items go in pakages, where you can add whatever you wish; gifts, notes etc.

I've been told by my peers in Second Life that I can add a note to the package in which I can state clearly the attribution.

Would this suffice in your opinion?

Thanks.

Ah that's a relief. Yes it would suffice, absolutely.

If this is the case, you don't need to keep the audio file name the same when you list the item initially, you can change it to be a bit more appealing to potential customers. For example, shortening "111035_soundbyter-com_www-soundbyter-com-peaceful-bells" to just "Peacefull Bells", then on the package notes stating the original name along with the other information; this would be entirely acceptable.

Your 'peers' would be correct then. use the package notes to give all the necessary information.

Sorted cool

Glad to be of assistance. Be sure to check back if you have any more questions in the future.

Good luck with your gesture sales.
