You should probably put this up in the "Sample Requests" forum as well.

What do you want to compress? Techniques differ according to the source audio and also the target.

One general piece of advice I can give is: if you can clearly hear something being compressed in a normal situation, you're probably doing it wrong. Try employing the "less is more" philosophy.

For standard things, I almost always start compression by setting the ratio at 2:1 and the threshold at -10, then tweaking up or down relatively until it sounds correct. The attack and release parameters are always very specific to the type of audio being compressed.

Remember:

• Use your ears: listen how quickly the compressor is reacting to transients and that the release time isn't affecting successive peaks adversely.
• Don't over do it
• Use "soft knee" for subtle affect
• Don't always favour short attack and release times unless you're trying to process isolated drum hits.

There could be more but context would be good here, because there are many many different ways to use a compressor.

I am the thing that goes bump in the night...

I always find water sounds make a great addition to many music pieces and have used them often.
I cannot always find what I want, though.
Particularly interested in water dripping sounds. Maybe you could experiment a bit with water dripping onto different mediums/objects: a plate, a small bowl, a small bowl or glass already with some water in it (sound will change depending on the object and the amound of water). Other objects can work too: a cloth, a sponge, a newspaper (again, sound changes with amount of water already absorbed).

I want to believe.
