Is it just me? So, after taking some advice from Dobroide in a previous post I've made up some mics using Primo EM172 capsules with my latest project being a matched pair of these capsules set either side of a fur covered 30cm Jecklin disc.I set this up in my front room to test, attaching it to my Edirol R-09hr. I turn on the recorder and approach the disc with an electric toothbrush buzzing away and walk around the rig, left, rear, right, above, and away. Great, test done. I sit down with my headphones, attach to the Edirol, press play, shut my eyes and prepare to listen. All good, all good, but suddenly there is someone in the room, I can hear the floorboards creaking, and their clothes rustling as they creep up on me! I quickly open my eyes but of course there is no-one there, it's my own clothes rustling and my own careless footsteps on the recording creating the illusion!
The last time this happened to me I was listening to my first binaural recording of a forest on the web. During the recording an annoying mosquito started buzzing round and around my head. With flailing arms I tried to rid myself of this annoyance so I could return to the recording. You've probably guessed the rest; the mozzy was part of the recording.
So, is it just me or have other freesounders been caught out by the realism of a recording?

It shows what a well thought out and implemented recording set up can achieve, and how much minutia of sound our brains filter out during the normal day. Guess the next step in your recording endeavor is to become a ninja!

Thanks Wibby. I'm slowly mastering the technique of sleeping with my eyes open!

As for the rustling cloths, beware of nylon jackets/trousers as they are never ending source of white noise.

Also, if you are into this kind of stuff (soft noises in general, but most natural sounds fall into this category) forget about going out in recording trips with other people or animals

Actually field-recording trips naked with dead kittens on your feet keeps most people away.
Don't know about the animals though. It doesn't seem to deter the cats in my garden.

Edit - I've been informed no good for recording birdsong. Dead kittens scare the birds away and attract dogs!

I dont live far away from 'The Naked Gardeners' at The Abbey Gardens of Malmesbury, Wiltshire. I think I've seen you skulking around the gooseberry bushes Wibby.
