I'm a new programmer(can't say I'm new to the code itself, but building a project all by itself that isn't built of some other game or work, or isn't another hello world app) and I'm trying to form my own video games, I have played around with several programming languages. at this point i will firmly say i understand java and C++
I also have good, but not perfect, understanding in opengl(version 1.1-1.5(bane of my existence!), 2.0-2.1, and now 3.0-3.3(using 3.2 for my game)), glsl(by extension of opengl), openal, glfw(by extension of lwjgl),
and i have been in MySQL, directX(i decided that opengl would be more wide spread, aka accessible via mac so i moved my focus away), python, and a few other computer languages
my game is being designed in java with opengl/openal/glfw by using lwjgl libraries to connect to the proper software and hardware to achieve decent or pretty graphics.
although java isn't the fastest language(c++ would be far faster) it would A. easier to program in for multiple systems(compile once, run anywhere) and B. it was the first true programming language i got heavy experience in, partially thanks to minecraft modding, and partially thanks to the easy to read javadoc by oracle. but it truly boils down to lack of experence, although i can claim up to 10 years experience with coding, that was mostly small modding.
Opengl i choose for its multi-platform capabilities, directx, from my knowledge, does not exist officially on mac. (so it would be a choice between c++ and directX, C++ and opengl, or java and opengl, so i choose the last choice because it seemed the cleanest).
trying to build this game is a real headache(obvious elephant in the room, I know), I want to put a lot of features for in it but I am always stressed for time between school and work(going to school to be a programmer because approx. 90% of my current experience is from modding games/ reading guides/ watching youtube). and i do have a huge love for programming and a huge love for video games, so this is a hobby at this point in time, although i am attempting to push it to be something more than just a hobby.
