there has never been talk about selling freesound, nor will there be in the future. Both me and my direct boss Xavier Serra - head of our department - AND the university itself are very proud of freesound and what we have accomplished.
The same goes for everyone in this thread, POST YOUR OPINION AND MOVE ALONG...
If you really want to shed some light on your opinion, start another thread.
On a completely other level:
LS
plag is one of the people i was talking about. he'd sell this site out in a second. excuse me for caring more about the site than you do. and listen. i'm not upset i'm not mad. you fuckers (yes see now that means im annoyned) need to learn how to interpet other's words
Plagazul has helped me build freesound from the first day he saw freesound (which is before anyone else saw freesound, as he was one of the few alpha testers). He's a personal friend of mine and both a moderator and administrator on this site, who has moderated thousands and thousands of sounds. Not only that, but he helps me out every time we do any activity with Freesound (the mass recordings, the freesound workshop and the prague workshop in the future). Please show him some respect.
If you wish to reply to this particular part of my reply, please send me a private message instead of posting here, thank you.

I vote no, as the question (as i interpreted it) was for my opinion on the matter.
And my thought was "No, I don't want sponsored links in a place called freesound"
But that doesn't mean I'd take offence, just that it's like having a bookstore in a library.

OK, I have just had a chat to someone I know who runs a popular commercial website (no trickery). They make on average $2500 a month from Google Ads, seems worth it to me.
digifish
I'm not crazy about it because it kind of feels like the current YouTube where they provide bandwidth/files but they make tons of money off the backs of other people with no compensation.(granted a lot of YouTube postings are ripoffs but they still host plenty off original works as well)
The "open" use of the money raises an eyebrow to what that actually means or might turn into. This site is a lot of work so it makes sense if you guys even make money off this or want to. If it goes that far please don't forget about the possibility of compensating the creators who you rely on to make your site so popular to begin with.
Since I don't even know how you guys pull off this site to begin with I would hesitantly say yes that the Google ads aren't a problem. Just don't veer far off from the original mission of the site.
As for LS complaining about popular artists posting on here I don't understand why he has such objection. If studio people post sounds for people to use here I think that's great. There should be room for everyone who wants to.
I like the idea brought up by 'Glaneur de sons'. Very targetted advertising is always better than the generic crap that the Internet throws up these days. No one here would agrue if they saw an AKG or Sound Solutions ad up here. I suppose the problem is none of those companies will pay as much as google might over the long-haul. It will ultimately not be up to us whether ads eventually come here or not, if the costs of running the site become too high, it will either find a better way to fund itself or close down entirely.
I voted yes, but under duress.
i say no, but only because google ads tend destroy the look of an otherwise clean looking forum, personally i find them very obtrusive.
i don't know (and nor it is my business to) how much revenue this site stands to gain from putting a google ad on here, so it's you're call, but, i suppose if you can make some extra $$$, why not take it, eh....
I think that some of the alternative revenue streams mentioned are more attractive- "pro/premium" membership, sponsorship, affiliates (get referral kickbacks for sending people to the sennheiser store, etc.), but I wouldn't say no to targeted text ads. Especially if they were on the search page and not the home page, etc.
I also like the idea of getting a group of users to agree to have their samples to be sold as a sample library that could be bought for use in commercial productions that are unwilling to fufill the attribution (or other) requirement of Sampling Plus license. This is similar to how some artists on ccMixter also sell their music on CD's, etc.
Also... just thinking out of the box here, but what about a sound bounty board? Users willing to put up a little cash would post sample requests with a bounty attatched. Once the sample request is successfully completed, the user would get the high quality sample and freesound and the contributor would share the profit, or the contributor could donate all proceeds to freesound. A bit like how the old Google Answers service used to work.
I don't know how practical these would be, they're just some ideas to kick around.
dobroide
uhh... how about alternatives like creating the figure of 'supporting member', for example? Adds look like a simple way to get some money, but over the long term... could have many-fold implications? And I also wonder, are adds coherent with FS licensing scheme? I need throughly think about it before voting.
agree with dobroide.
I already thinked about supporting Freesound with a donation (I have not a credit card).
the only other way is buying a Tshirt: I think there could be more ways to invite users to contribute.
imho the problem is not Freesound with Google ads inside, is Google everywhere in the net.
an open source based community should give importance to similar free-copyright activities:
Google is a huge money machine, although being a very useful tool.
so I voted no.
anyway I'll respect different opinions, and will keep on participate in Freesound
hello_flowersYes. I agree with you. Also, like someone else here said, as long they don't cause any type of sound. AT ALL.
I don't see why not. Server maintenance, new hardware, freesound workshops, musicians, sounds like there are more pro's than cons here As long as they aren't pop-ups...
Bram
We were thinking of adding google ads to freesound
As the first senior most-active-uploader to pass the 1k minutes barrier, I say NO ADS.
Please don't. Keep this site as clean as it is now.
Also it ain't none of Google's business to know who is downloading what sounds and why...
This is a free sound project!
Free as in world.
It is NOT about money.
I don't think Google would know who downloads what sounds and why and no this is not about money but running a site like this costs money and Google Ads are, I think, the most unobstrusive ads we could have. They are only plain text that I think admins can put the color of their choice.

think again.
they know who you are, due to the ads they know on what page you are, and who else coma to this page. this ads stuff is not about you getting money, it is about them getting all cross-link-information. social profiling to say the least. and you have NO control of their activities or infromation.
keep freesound free !
well... i voted no, but i'm not gonna cry either way. i bought a t-shirt. i aim to constantly try to bridge the gap on my download/upload ratio and upload wanted sound when i can. thats how i support freesound. i fuckin love freesound and hope to see it grow up big and strong... for that?ads would be worth it, i guess. there are other ways besides completely sucking corporate cock tho. i'd give 5 dollars each for stickers that cost a quarter to make(as long as they aren't fugly and stupid).... i'd give 30 bucks a year for slightly more room in the avatar/private message department (even tho i couldn't give a shit less about those features). and if it came right down to it.. i would beat ANYONES ass down and go to jail if thats what it took to keep freesound alive and "free".  (btw if these samples weren't "free" i would steal them anyway)
stickman
(btw if these samples weren't "free" i would steal them anyway)
we've been through this before. google ads are a bad thing. will the money actually support the site? or pay the people doing it? i'm not sorry for saying this but i'm not down with paying someone for doing this. ya know..paying someone for something THAT'S FREE. hell give me money for my shit then.
if it goes to buying new servers etc..then fine..but the ads won't generate enough money to make a difference. cuz i for one never click on ads and isn't that how you make your money off of them to begin with? why clutter up such a great page with junk? we have enough of that on every site out there-try to keep this one pure from birth til death.
mkoenig
If you need money to manage your servers and are not getting enough via donations... what else are you going to do to subsidize your funds?
exactly, but...
...try to keep this one pure from birth til death...
it's really hard to decide because LS made a good point there.
we have enough of that on every site out there-
ha, yeah, and you know those sites that have ads imbedded into random words on the page? They have those little frames that pop up whenever your mouse goes over it accidentally... Wow, if a site really has to do something like that to get money to keep the site up, then you know that site SUCKS.
So anyways, i'm really not sure,
although I'm leaning more towards... ... ..NO google ads
i want to clear something up. I'M NOT DISSING YOU BRAM so don't go getting all butt hurt on me. none of my posts are directed at you. i just reread a few of them and I think i come off like i'm talking about you (Cuz you do all of the site work). that's not my intentions.
but here's a suggestion to help keep costs down. STOP adding them little things. keep the page straight simple like it is now. We don't need another scroll down box or to be able to connect this to that and link it to this page or that one..so we can say..oh look we are tech geeks we use something really irrelevant but hey WE HAVE IT AND OTHER PAGES DON'T! ..KEEP IT THIS WAY. if people care enough they can DO THEIR OWN DAMN WORK.
