Hi,
I need a sound of scraping Metal in the distant. Not permanent, but rather carried from afar by the wind or echo. It can be combined with some deep sounds like wind.
It should be not skreech like, but rusty, old and abandoned.
The sound should complete a loop.
Hm ... I hope you get the picture. It's not easy to describe (my English ist not the best also - sry).

How long a piece do you want ?

Not too short, maybe 5 minutes. I really don't know nothing about this stuff and how much work it is. It should not repeat itself too quickly because it is meant for a games fan-level as background sound.

No. It should not be so present, more in the distant, from far away, just carried with some dark wind sound. It should sound hollow, abandoned, sad and dark. A little bit of this: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=43552

Just not so regular, more distant, withe a sort of hollow wind and deeper tones.

I have made another with this sample in the distance:

http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=46070 Which was made from the one you linked. The first instance is at about 5 secs.

Here:

I know it is no foghorn it just reminds me of one.

I took my own sample and reworked it. Pitched it down basically and then reversed it. Now it's a quintessential Doom background. Don't know if it suits your purpose but I'm pleased with the result.

If you want some heavy metal I’ve pitch-shifted THE_bizniss’ aluminium drink can down so it sounds more like an oil drum, (or theatrical thunder made by wobbling a large metal sheet).

There is a "before" sound of the can, at normal pitch, at the start of these samples.

Woah, not bad, all of them!
Just little things are left for my purpose to change:

Benboncan: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=78442 Could you remove the water and the birds? The metal could be a little more present, I can hardly hear it. The wind is great!

HerbertBoland: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=78448 Scares the hell out of me. Nearly perfect! Just a little too distant is the metal sound.

Timbre: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=78432 Is it possible to mix the 2 last drink can sounds in your sample with that sound file from HerbertBoland? I really like those, great job!

Help yourself, but personally I don't think they will improve HerbertBoland's excellent version.

^^ Exactly, I mean Timbre's suggestion. It's best to do your own mixdown. Then you have a maximum control and can loop and tweak this rather critical soundbed to your needs. Freesound offers an abundance of excellent ingredients for it, but it's no studio...

I guess I'll be doomed with getting just crap if I try it myself. So I will certainly take your soundfile, HerbertBoland. Thanks a lot.
You can all feel free to post similar soundfiles, so I can put them into the game. It's a level inside a crypt, and those sounds will match perfectly.

Crypt? Crypts are silent, aren't they? I.e. you hear your blood pumping.

This crypt is haunted. The ghosts are rather noisy! grin When it is finished I can let you know by posting a link here if you want to. But it still takes much work.

Every crypt has sarcophagi , here's one I made earlier ...

Nice work! I'm sure I can make use of it, if the players are really willing to open one of the sarcophagi

I agree with HerbertBoland

It's best to do your own mixdown. Then you have a maximum control and can loop and tweak this rather critical soundbed to your needs.

I have uploaded a birdless version of the wind, this contains no other effects so you can add them as you wish.

http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=78485

Also the metal scrapes I used

Someone handy with effects might be able to do something with this:
