Hello everyone! I need your help. Before I go on, check out the teaser trailer for the short film "Probe" here on vimeo:
We're needing several sound effects series for this short film, and we could use your help! As we're creating this film with no budget, and using open-source software like Blender for our VFX, we figured that using the freesound community for our SFX would be awesome, too! Here's what we're needing:
Some scifi ship flyover sound effects for the enemy ships the "Kestrels". These are big, beefy ships with lots of engine power. One flies directly overhead, so we'd need a bone-jarring rumble effect!
The Probe--sorry for the spoiler--while it looks sleek and curvy on the outside, actually holds a powerful and deadly weapon on the inside. It transforms at the end of the movie to reveal a large cannon embedded inside of its hull. We need some mechanical hissing/parts moving sound effects. And also, we need a unique "lazer blast" sound for when it shoots down a Kestrel. Any ideas?
Our video has already gotten 10k views on Vimeo, and we used several freesound.org sounds for it. We'd love to be able to credit you and your sounds during the Probe credits. Think anyone can help us out?
check out the production blog too at www.probefilm.wordpress.com
Thanks guys!

I watched your teaser, behind the scenes films, and looked at your blog. I've got some stuff I recorded in a metal worker's workshop. If I combine that with some cool hi-tech servo stuff, I think that might be just the thing for movement sounds for your cannon thingy.
Do you have any film you can share of the moving parts you need foley for, with some idea of scale? That would be a big help in constructing and timing sounds for it.
Your film looks really really good, I'm looking forward to having a go, even if you don't use what I create. I hope my efforts can do it justice.
Awesome quality of trailer - check my last uploads - i've made some suitable sounds. If you want more sounds i'll join it. For better effect some preview scenes will be helpful
Hey guys! Thanks for the quick replies.
I'm actually editing some scenes now. The probe transformation scene is still being animated, but when it's done I'll post the link here. Also, those who are interested in reading the script to get a better idea of what the film is about, you can send me a message with your email and I'll forward the script on to you!
Also, I'm looking for some hollow/ambient wind sound effects. I know I can find those here, but if anyone knows of any in particular that'd be great!
I'll check out some of those effects as soon as I can, Benboncan. And Spleencast, I'd love to see what you can come up with! Send me your email address and I'll be in contact with you.
Thanks guys!

We're trying to have everything done by the first week of May. From a visual effects production standpoint, that probably won't happen. We're finishing filming tonight, so at least the rough cut will be done. I'm so excited to have you working with us! I'll send you a rough cut as soon as its finished via email. Keep me updated.
Everyone else: you're welcome to join too! Send me a PM with your email, and I can get you all involved! Thanks!

Hey CGEffex and Benboncan,
I checked out the sfx you guys have listed, and they're great. I'll be using several elements you alread have, and also any others you can help out on. I've got your names and sound files that will be marked in the credits. Thanks guys!
~jace
Thanks! When they're uploaded, can you give me the links? I'm sitting talking with my lead animator for the Probe transformation sequence, and we're talking about the SFX required for the transform itself, lots of mechanical noises during the transform. Think you can do some of these? Also, I still need a "comet flying through the air" kinda sound. I'm going to show the probe coming in during re-entry and need a wind/buffeting "space-shuttle" kinda sound with the wind whooshing through the "microphones." Got any ideas?
Looking forward to seeing what you have. I'm rendering out the rough cut of the film now. Mind you, it has no color correction and no VFX, so it's pretty plain and looks rather silly. But it'll soon come together. I'm about to go talk to the guy doing music for us, so it'll be a seriously collaborative event.
I'll have that stuff for you soon,

Stereotypical spaceship corridor/tunnel sound ... http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=75521
Hey guys! I'm ready to get kickin again! This last weekend was my birthday so I took a break from all things computer related! CGEFEX, I got your email. I think the best way to send me sound effects is through email directly, otherwise the links to the freesound sounds would be great. I've got your sounds now, let me review them real quick and I'll post another topic here/email you.
1. I'd make at least a 30/60/90 series of the hollow winds if you can. It looks like there's some here, so don't kill yourself.
2. I'm actually going to not use the water dripping sound. If you have some metal creaking sfx, that'd be the best!
3. Around ten seconds to be safe. If you can make lots of distortion as it comes through (space shuttle style) that would be incredible!
4. If you can keep your sfx separate that would be great, so that I can time them in Premiere in post!
5. I'm going to have a video of the roughed out transformation here soon, so you guys can start working on it!
6. I'm going to let you decide. Give me some stuff to work with, and I can refine it from there. The Kestrels should have a distinct sound that lets our characters know they're coming. I used an actual Kestrel bird call and slowed it down to make it eerie. I think I told you that, but I can't remember. Something along the lines of a distinctive sound that alerts you to its coming would be EXCELLENT.
7. I'm not sure. Something aquatic. Maybe like a whale call?
8. Yes! More explosions would be great. When the Kestrel goes down, I really want it to explode
9. They are opening a metal door. I've got a SFX that kinda works for it, but if you could give me a squeaky/rusty/metallic door (not a sliding door, but a hinged door) that would be incredible.
10. Maybe! We're actually probably going to cut out the multiple probe/kestrel destruction sequences because of time constraints. but a few extra explosions couldn't hurt!
Okay, so stay tuned to this forum. I'm going to have a rough cut of the movie (no post production/color correction/visual effects sequences) for you guys hopefully later today. That way you can view the rough cut and get an idea as to what sounds are needed where. Granted, the 3D scenes are the ones that need the most work, but you can start to see the ambient sounds we'll need for outside, inside, and whatnot. I'll post the link and hopefully the password (keep it safe from the public) here soon. Tomorrow will have the rough probe transoformation sequence so that you guys can start to visualize what sounds will be needed for the mechanical transforming.
Thanks for your help! i'm excited to see what you guys come up with!

CGEffex.... your stuff is incredible! I couldn't ask for better sound effects!!!
Quick notes: everything was perfect! Would it be possible for the probe transformation sequences to get more "things" transforming? You'll see what I mean when I send you the link to the previs of the transformation, but we'll have many mechanical parts moving. If we could get a sense of the flurry of energy behind all these parts moving back, forth, up and forward, that would be incredible.
I love all your stuff. Consider it all in the film
~jace
I thought of another sound we'll need. Know the effect they use when a grenade goes off nearby, you're knocked to the ground, and then when you're coming to you hear that buzzing/ringing in your ears and then everything comes back into focus? Think anyone could rig that sfx for me? I'd need it to be around eight seconds long, starting with the ringning, and then have some ambient rumbles/debris fall in the background slowly coming back into clarity, and then maybe a few seconds of that ambient sound effect before it fades out.
Also, there's a scene where the Kestrel flies directly overhead of the camera. Can anyone create the sound of the spaceship being RIGHT overhead? This would mean some engine pulses and the rumblings of the afterburners, and--if we can--some electric sounds/pulses/sparks that could help attentuate the fact that this spaceship is clearly the bad guy. It'd need to have a slight doppler effect as it comes overhead from a building, and then some deep afterburner rumbles as the engines are directly exposed to the camera's "microphone". Then, if there could be a continuation of that sound from a changed perspective as we see our main characters sheltered under a building, hiding from it. Less raw and intense.
Thanks guys! You all are great!

hey, I edited the post above. Shoulda just wrote a new one. Might want to check out part 1&2 of the above message
I wrote you an email about the variation of the hollow wind. That would be highly useful!
Creaky door was perfect. I added some reverb and it was great.
I'm a fan of the kestrel sound effect, just the first part of that call is a bit too overblown. I like the voice though!
The probe call is getting near great. The ending, though, seems like the parts are looped and faded out. If you could add some elements there to help cover that fadeout, that would be great.
Falling through atmosphere series is perfect.
I'm not going to use the lazer blast 2 sound effect. The first one is perfect. When added to other explosions and whatnot, it'll be sweet.
I wrote about the transformations earlier. The one we have is a great starting point, now we need to flush it out.
Water drip is great!
Hope that helps!
Hey guys! So I've been fighting the computer literally for the past two days to get our HD footage out into something manageable. I've uploaded it to Vimeo and it's password-protected, but the password to play it is "freesound" without the quotes. This is the rough cut from which you guys can work with, and get a feel as to how these scenes are going to work. The timing for the CG effects are just estimates.
If you have any comments, be sure to let me know. I'm going to release a color-corrected version here soon, and then release it to people so they can start to get an idea as to how stuff is going to work.
I'll have the probe transformation sequence done as soon as my animator is finished blocking it out.
Thanks guys!
~jace
P.S. The video is processing, and vimeo estimates a two hour wait time. So... if you can't watch the video yet, wait an hour or so and then try it again
Hey guys. CGeffex is doing some great work for us, but I thought I'd give others an opportunity too.
I'm looking for some mechanical effects that can go along with this sequence:
Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

Probably needs pitch shifting and slowing down.
Might do.
